Neea Buxifolia, also known as Nia and Saltwood, is native to Puerto Rico. Mature trees can grow to 15 feet in nature.
The tiny leaves, small flowers and bright red fruit makes this a great bonsai subject. Filtered sun is recommended, especially in the hottest part of summer.
While it can survive temperatures in the 40's, it is best to bring it indoors before it goes into the 50's.
It is a fast grower with unpredictable growth direction, so it should be trimmed often to maintain the desired shape.
It likes soil that is a bit acid. Use one of the many brands of acid-based plant food for best results.
Considering all the positive attributes, Neea Buxifolia may be the one of the most under-appreciated species used in bonsai cultivation.
