Japanese Maple

The Maples on this page are all grafted Maples.   Grafting is the best method for many cultivars. More information below the photos.   The Japanese Maple is one of the largest, most varied species of tree used in bonsai cultivation.  Its small leaf size, and wide variety of colors, added to its branching and wood growth characteristics make it a great candidate for addition to any collection.

Many of the hybrid varieties of Japanese Maple began as a single shoot on another variety of maple. Often this hybrid is removed and grown, but as it develops it does not produce seeds that resemble the parent plant. The only way to propagate it is to graft a scion onto a strong maple understock. Maples do not do well indoors at any time of the year.  In the fall the leaves turn colors, and drop.  They are bare from late fall through early spring.  A Japanese Maple should not be kept indoors  in winter unless it is in a location where the temperature never goes above 40 degrees.
