It was the main source for purple textile dye in Europe from the 16th century until chemical dyes began being produced, but it is still used in the manufacture of purple dye today.  It is also used for histological (blood & tissue work) stain.  Because of its tiny leaves and rapid growth (by bonsai standards) it is a great subject for any bonsai hobbyist.
